News: Learn Spanish or French After School!
|
|
Did you know that learning languages
helps increase listening ability, memory, creativity and critical
thinking? In addition to developing these thinking skills, foreign language study
exposes children to other ways of looking at the world.
The Coles PTA is pleased to offer after-school Elementary Foreign Language Programs this year. In the initial offering, students in grades 2-5 may choose from French, Spanish or may opt to be exposed to both languages.
The program cost to cover teacher and materials expenses for 15 weekly classes will be $90. Classes will start the week of November 17, 2009 and will run through the end of March, 2009. The PTA will review any requests for scholarships or payment plans where necessary in order to help ensure that no student is unnecessarily denied this opportunity. The program schedule is as follows:
Introduction to French
- Tuesdays, 3:45-4:30 p.m., Grades 2-3
- Thursdays, 3:45-4:30 p.m., Grades 4-5
Introduction to Spanish
- Tuesdays, 3:45-4:30 p.m., Grades 4-5
- Thursdays, 3:45-4:30 p.m., Grades 2-3
Registration is due by Wednesday, November 13, and materials are available online in the PTA Dowload Archive. For questions or additional information, please contact Angela Carey at careyax@pwcs.edu.

News: ANNOUNCING: Coles PTA Reorganization!
|
|
Do you feel uncomfortable about joining a PTA Board?
Wish you could help plan an event without being committed for the entire year?
Wish you knew how much time was needed BEFORE you said yes?
The current Coles PTA board recognizes and respects that all of our parents are operating under time constraints. For that reason, the PTA at Coles will be transitioning during 2007-08 from a relatively small group of dedicated directors to a set of four committees:
- Family Events
- Community Relations
- Academic Support
- Ways & Means
Each will have a specific area of focus and will be coordinated by a small executive board.

Events: May 16, 2007 Planning Commission Hearing
|
|
webmaster writes "Contact your planning commission representatives!
[skip this message and go straight to the email tool]
The CIP (construction in place) project scheduled to begin at Coles in
2007 has been moved to 2008. It is a two-year project that will start with
the renovation of office and common areas during the summer of 2008 and
will continue with renovations of 4 classrooms at a time during the 2008-2009
school year. The plan for mitigating the classroom disruptions during this
second phase is to install four more mobile classrooms into which the children
whose rooms are being renovated will be moved.
The Prince William County Park Authority has raised an objection to this
plan, stating that the additional mobile classrooms would encroach upon
the football and baseball practice areas that they have granted to Coles
Little League and to the American Pride Youth Football League for the 2007-2008
year. The county planning commission is responsible for reviewing the use
of all public lands to determine whether they are consistent with a published
2003 Comprehensive Plan. The education section of the Comprehensive Plan
can be found at http://www.pwcgov.org/docLibrary/PDF/001074.pdf, and the park authority has cited section ED-POLICY 4 of this plan, which
stipulates "promotion of alternative uses of space through joint occupancy
and availability of community services and facilities."
The planning commission is holding a public hearing on Wednesday, May 16,
and our school will be represented at that meeting. We ask in the interim
that you email the planning commission members to let them know that the
primary use of public school grounds must be to provide an environment
conducive to learning, and that without the mobile classrooms, that environment
will not exist for our children.
Please help us flood their email inboxes by using the email tool located here. A suggested text is provided, but please feel free to modify as you wish.
